Brazil broke the record in the registration of biological control pesticides this year. With the publication of new registrations by the Ministry of Agriculture (Mapa) on 20th August, in the Federal Official Gazette, the total number of registrations in 2020 is 56 low-impact products, the largest number of product registrations in this profile in the same year.
“It is a record that will contribute significantly to national agriculture. They are products formulated from biological pest control agents, such as viruses and bacteria, which only attack crop pests,” said Bruno Breitenbach (General Coordinator of Pesticides and Related Products).
The ministry reported that 2018 previously held the record for the highest number of low-impact products with 52 authorized. Products that use biological control agents in their formulation are control alternatives for farmers to combat pests.
"Our expectation is that by the end of the year, more products that use biological or biochemical control agents in their formulation will be registered, making 2020 the biggest year in history in terms of registering phytosanitary products," said Breitenbach.
